Time to Test Your Heater!

Autumn has arrived in Pennsylvania, and local homeowners are just a few months away from the cold of winter. There’s no better time for Monroeville residents to make sure their heating systems are prepared for the chilly temperatures.

Before getting heater repair in Monroeville, take a few steps to test your heating system to ensure it’s ready for the cold of winter.

Check the Filters

Chances are that it’s been some time since you’ve checked your heater’s filters. Even if you haven’t used them in several months, they may still need to be replaced. Turn off your home’s circuit breaker, remove your heater filter, and inspect it.

If it’s dirty, replace the filter. A new, clean filter will allow air to flow freely and use less energy. It’s always a good idea to have a few spare filters handy.

Test the Thermostat

Turn your power back on to see if your furnace is heating properly. As your home warms, your thermostat should keep up with the temperature change. You may sense an unusual odor the first time you fire it up, which is fine — it’s burning off the dust that’s accumulated over the summer.

If the air doesn’t heat or the thermostat doesn’t change within 20 minutes, you may need to call for heater repair in Monroeville.

Test Your Water Radiators

If your home has hot water radiators, now’s a good time to test whether they’re ready for winter. Turn on all the radiator valves and set the thermostat to maximum. After 15 minutes, touch the radiators to find out whether they’ve heated up.

Refill Your Oil Tank

Many homes in Monroeville are heated with oil, so now is a good time to get them refilled. This is no problem if your tank is automatically refilled. If it isn’t, take the time to get it filled now — the price of oil goes up when winter hits.
