HVAC Financing Options in Pittsburgh: How to Pay for a New System

A new HVAC system in the Pittsburgh area runs $8,000–$22,000 installed depending on the equipment, your home size, and ductwork condition. Most homeowners don’t have that kind of cash sitting in checking. The good news: financing has gotten significantly better over the last 5 years, and there are now several solid options that don’t require touching home equity or carrying a credit card balance at 24% APR.

This is what we recommend to Hoffner customers across the Pittsburgh metro when they’re financing a new furnace, AC, or heat pump install.

Option 1: Manufacturer or contractor-arranged financing

Most major HVAC manufacturers and many independent contractors partner with consumer finance companies like Synchrony, Wells Fargo, and Service Finance to offer in-house financing. The standard offers we see in 2026:

  • 12-18 months 0% APR with equal monthly payments (you pay it off over the term, no interest accrues)
  • 12-month deferred interest (no payments due, but interest accrues at 24%+ if you don’t pay in full by month 12, dangerous unless you have a clear pay-off plan)
  • 60-120 month installment loans at 7-12% APR, predictable monthly payment, no surprises

Application is typically online or done by the contractor on a tablet at your kitchen table. Approval is usually instant, and rates depend on your credit score. Most Hoffner financing customers see decisions within 5 minutes.

Option 2: Home equity line of credit (HELOC)

If you have substantial home equity (Pittsburgh home values have grown significantly since 2020), a HELOC may be the cheapest option:

  • Current Pittsburgh-area HELOC rates: 8-10% APR (variable, tied to prime rate)
  • Tax-deductible interest if used for home improvement (consult your tax preparer)
  • Approval typically takes 2-4 weeks
  • Closing costs of $0-$500 for most banks

This works well if you have the credit profile and home equity, and if you can wait 2-4 weeks for funds. If your furnace just died in December, this isn’t the option for you.

Option 3: Energy-efficient mortgage / FHA Title I

Less common but useful: FHA Title I home improvement loans can finance HVAC up to $25,000 with no equity required, fixed rates around 9-13%. Requires going through an FHA-approved lender. Better for first-time homeowners or homes with limited equity.

Option 4: PACE financing

Pennsylvania has a PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) program for residential energy-efficient upgrades, including high-SEER AC and high-AFUE furnaces. Repayment is added to your property tax bill over 10-20 years. Lower credit requirements, but the lien on your property complicates future home sales. Use cautiously.

Federal tax credits stack with financing

Regardless of how you finance, you can still claim the Inflation Reduction Act tax credits for qualified equipment:

  • Up to $2,000 for an Energy Star heat pump (30% of installed cost)
  • Up to $600 for a high-efficiency gas furnace (30% of installed cost)
  • Up to $600 for a qualified central AC

These are credits, not deductions, they directly reduce your tax owed dollar-for-dollar. Apply them to next year’s tax return when you file. Hoffner provides the AHRI certificate and manufacturer documentation you need to claim.

Sample financing math: $14,000 system

OptionMonthlyTotal cost
18-month 0% APR (contractor financing)$778$14,000
60-month at 8% APR$284$17,038
HELOC at 9% APR (interest-only first 10yr)$105Varies
120-month at 10% APR$185$22,217

The 18-month 0% APR is the lowest-total-cost option if you can swing the monthly payment. Stretch financing only makes sense if you absolutely need the lower payment to cash-flow the install.
